The wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner was shot by Los Angeles police today and later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, LAPD said. The shooting occurred as officers were doing a search of an Eagle Rock neighborhood after a hit-and-run crash on the 134 Freeway at 3:30 p.m. that did not involve the couple.
LAPD officers responded to the area to assist the California Highway Patrol in a search for three suspects who fled from the crash scene into the neighborhood about eight miles northeast of downtown L.A. According to the LAPD, officers approached the rear of a home in the 5300 block of Waldo Place and spotted a woman — later identified as Shriner — who was “armed with a handgun” in the yard of a neighboring residence.
“The officers ordered Shriner to drop the handgun numerous times, however, she refused,” LAPD said in a statement. “Shriner then pointed the handgun at the officers,” prompting at least one to open fire. Shriner “was struck by gunfire and fled into her residence,” police said.

She exited the home about an hour later and was taken into custody — a scene that aired on local TV news. Another woman, reported to be the couple’s babysitter, also was detained, but there was no immediate word on whether she was arrested or remains in custody.
LAPD said at least one of the hit-and-run suspects broke into the Shriners’ home and that Jillian Shriner opened fire on them. Police said the responding officers believed that she was shooting at them and returned fire.
Jillian Shriner, 51, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and no officers were hurt. LAPD said a 9mm handgun was recovered from the Shriners’ home. Her bail was set at $1 million; it was unclear whether she remains in custody.
One suspects from the crash and ensuing shootout was detained, police said, but two others remain at large.
Scott Shriner is a co-founder of the popular Los Angeles band Weezer, which is scheduled to play the Coachella festival this week. The quartet has released more than a dozen studio albums since breaking out with its self-titled 1994 debut known as “The Blue Album.” It has sold more than 5 million copies in the U.S. and spawned three Top 10 rock hits in “Undone – The Sweater Song,” “Buddy Holly” and “Say It Ain’t So.”
The quartet fronted by Rivers Cuomo followed with three platinum and two gold albums from 1996-2005, and its other best-known songs include “Hash Pipe,” “Beverly Hills,” “Islands in the Sun,” “Africa” and “Pork and Beans,” which won Best Music Video at the 2009 Grammys. Weezer also has four other career Grammy noms.
The Shriners have been married for about 20 years and have two adopted children.
