The old adage “follow the money” says all we need to know about speed cameras. From a pilot project of eight cameras to a plan to bring the total to 84 this fall, the city was well on its way to tripling the $97.5 million in fines since 2020.
It’s all about the money. And Coun. Tim Tierney makes it clear with his motion for the province to provide “equivalent funding as mitigation.” There it is folks, game, set, match — it’s about the money. It’s always been the money.
As they expanded, they had almost 20 per cent of cameras outside school zones. And what of bright orange speed safety signs in advance of school zones like we see in construction zones? What of speed bumps? What of warning speed indicators in advance of the school safety zones? The answer is no, no and no. These proven safety measures would reduce speed, increase safety and, oh yeah, cut the fine revenue. A ticket in the mail to the car owner (not the driver) two weeks after the alleged speeding that may have put children at risk, that’s for safety? Did that slow the driver? What do they take us for?

HIT THEM WHERE IT HURTS
What are you thinking, Mr. Ford?
Yes, speed and red light cameras are a cash grab because people are breaking the laws of the road. What is the point of having speed bumps, flashing lights, warnings painted on the road, etc., when they are blatantly being ignored?
Hit people where it hurts — their wallets and a rise in insurance rates — and, presto, we have converted bad drivers to responsible ones.
Put the cash into repairing our roads, which are a mess!

WANT CANADA BACK
Why can’t a no-confidence vote be called so we can get the Conservatives in? Come on, give us a break, Canadians have had enough of this Liberal government; we need some serious change for the good. Give us back our Canada we once knew.
