On the first day of the return to Parliament (Sept. 15), Mark Carney needs to march in like a man on a mission, while clutching a paper in his hand, like he is carrying the Ten Commandments, and slam it down on the desk and proclaim: “Starting today, we are commencing with building one of the many infrastructure projects that the majority of Canadians have been asking for, and that is a new pipeline. Possibly the first of many.

“We are also removing our ban on shipping tankers and for now holding off on any increase on the emissions caps, along with a pause on EVs. We can listen to arguments against these things while we proceed, but we will not be held up for decades by the very small minority that are opposed.”

This alone would put him in the ranks of Canada’s finest prime ministers.

Mark Carney won the election by championing himself as a great negotiator and the best person to handle U.S. President Donald Trump. Then, after saying retaliatory tariffs would bring in billions to offset Trump tariffs, he secretly dropped many of them during the election campaign. Now, Carney has obviously been told by Trump to remove even more, which he has immediately done after their phone conversation.

Obviously Carney is proving to be out of this depth in dealing with Trump, who perfected the art of the deal.

Rather than a great negotiator, Carney is proving to be a great capitulator.

PARK EV MANDATE

Re: EV mandate speeding toward us and must be stopped, Jay Goldberg column, Aug. 22

When will the Liberal government ever learn that you can push Canadians only so far before even the most docile ones will respond, speak up and rebel?

The EV mandate, by all standards, is completely unrealistic. Canadian consumers do not want electric vehicles. We live (so we are constantly told) in a free country: people have the right to buy the car of their choice. Governments have no business forcing their choice on dealerships, car manufacturing companies or consumers.

The EV mandate is, as Jay Goldberg writes, just another unpopular relic of the Justin Trudeau era.
